Ashi: the Attainment of the Divine
Aṣ̌i (/arti/ in Gathic) is a complex term frequently appearing in the Gathas. While typically translated as ‘Reward’, the term likely has strong implications of ‘Attainment’ (if not outright meaning ‘Attainment’ and/or ‘Reward’ depending on context. This meaning can be seen in the etymology of the word, from ar- ‘to reach’ + -ti- ‘abstract feminine suffix’.
In the Gathas, the term is used to refer to the process of attaining the divine (and each of its component aspects) as well as the reward one gets for attaining them. It is also personified in the Gathas as the divine mental concept that facillitates movement, gaining, or attainment in the realm of mind/energy. In this way, it is paired with Sraōša, which represents how the pathways are communicated/offered in each instance.
