Who were the Magi? (coming soon)
While frequently claimed to be a mystery, the magi are well attested in Zoroastrian sources (as well as in Greek and Roman ones) as a specific type of affluent Māda (Median) priestly class which gained prominence in the Persian Empire. Their myth of 3 consecutive “saviors” (Saoshyants) born of virgin mothers who started their missions at 30, and the 3 consecutive kings who would aid their missions, likely caused their appearance in the Bible. The modern term for Zoroastrian priest, Mobed, is derived from the title Magu-pati ‘Chief Magi (Magu-pati < Mowbed <Mobed). Full article coming soon.
