Xratu: Intellect, Willpower

This article will cover the term Xratu in the Gathas, which has no divine status. The term probably just means intellect or intelligence in the Gathas. Worth noting is that the cognate in Sanskrit was described by the grammarian Panini as meaning ‘willpower’, and the term exists in modern Persian as Xrad, meaning ‘wisdom’. Since xratu in Avestan is a neutral term, with people being described in the Gathas as having a bad intellect (duš.xratu-), neither ‘will-power’ or ‘wisdom’ are likely the meanings in Avestan. ZARATHUSHTRIAN ASSEMBLY

Zarathushtrian Assembly was founded by a group of visionary Zoroastrians in 1990 to create a progressive platform for people of all backgrounds, regardless of current religious belief, world view, national origin, ethnicity, or personal interpretation of Zoroastrianism, to study the philosophy and teachings of Zoroaster (Zarathushtra), as taught in the Gathas (his thought-provoking mantras).
